Biography

Thinking about security from Africa

Dr Sylvain N’Guessan’s work focuses on strategic foresight and on defence and security issues, with particular attention to West Africa. [Doctoral discipline, thesis title, university and year to be completed]

His approach starts from an observation: African states and organisations largely rely on strategic analysis produced outside the continent, according to priorities that are not always their own. Founding the Institut de Stratégies Abidjan meant building a local capacity for analysis and training; founding the Strategic Reflection Circle “Abidjan” meant opening that reflection to public debate.

A word from the founder

Draft · pending approvalThis text has been drafted as a proposal and may only be published under Dr Sylvain N’Guessan’s name after he has reviewed and approved it.

“We live in an age where the unpredictable has become the norm. Coups, pandemics, energy shocks, disinformation campaigns: each of these crises caught out decision-makers who nonetheless had the signals needed to anticipate them.

Strategy is not a luxury reserved for great powers. It is the condition of our autonomy. Training our leaders in strategic thinking and offering our fellow citizens a space to reflect on world affairs means refusing to be subjected to history, and trying, modestly but resolutely, to take part in it.”
